Drops of Rain

A Newsletter From The Rainmaker Group
 August 14th, 2008

Hello !

We've got a great newsletter for you this week to help you Maximize Possibility in your organization!

Our lead article this week addresses an interesting question that has popped up online recently: Can technology replace talent?

Our second article challenges you to take a look at your attitude when it comes to acquiring new talent to fill the seats on your organization's bus.  Are you selecting candidates or are you hiring them?  The difference is much bigger than you might think!

We've also got a QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote from John Miller addressing a dangerous question: "When will they improve things around here?", as well as a powerful video from Malcolm Gladwell on the employee mismatch problem and the challenge of hiring in the modern world.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - When Will They Improve Things Around Here?
Can Technology Trump Talent?
Technology Versus TalentA reader of our recent blog questioning if Talent Management is too important to be left to HR asked a great question in the comments section of the post.

Our reader wanted to know why, in the past decade, organizations have become differentiated more so by talent than by technology.

To me it all boils down to the susceptibility of a competitive advantage to be replicated by one's competition.

Technology is great and had dramatically altered the landscape of business over the past 15 years.  However, the problem with technology is that its applications and advantages are easily replicated by one's competition as they can likely purchase the same technology and use it in the same way you are.

Talent on the other hand is much more difficult to replicate.

Employee Selection Mindset: Are You Selecting or Hiring Candidates?  There is a Big Difference!
Big question... Are you Hiring candidates for open positions or are you Selecting candidates for open positions?

You might be scratching your head and asking yourself "What's the difference?"

The difference is the mindset your organization takes towards acquiring new team members to fill its bus.

Are you trying to fill a seat, desk, or workspace, or are you carefully and strategically selecting the best possible candidate for the position?

The difference is HUGE and is far more than a matter of semantics.

Featured Guru - Malcolm Gladwell
Malcolm GladwellMalcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for the New Yorker and the author of two of the most exciting books to be released in the in the past decade:  The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference and Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.

In this week's Featured Guru section we'd like to feature a recent speech by Gladwell at the 2008 New Yorker conference where Gladwell takes on one of the biggest challenges businesses are facing: hiring the right employees.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - "When will they improve things around here?"
John Miller
Could things be better in your organization?  Does your organization have problems?

Of course it does!  All organizations have problems.

How do you deal with your organization's challenges?  Do you wait for somebody to come up with a solution and follow their lead?  Or worse, do you complain to others about the situation, fueling the fire?

Or do you ask yourself a QBQ! such as a "What can I do right now to improve my organization?"

The answer to these questions depends on your level of personal accountability at work.

In this week's QBQ! QuickNote John Miller discusses his favorite meeting theme - "Believe or Leave!"

Creating a culture of Personal Accountability should be a top priority for all organizations.  Team members who think and practice Personal Accountability can bring about incredible changes for an organization.  The blame game disappears, morale increases, and customer experiences are enhanced all thanks to the power of Personal Accountability.

The Rainmaker Group is proud to offer powerful day long QBQ! workshops instilling the power of Personal Accountability into teams and organizations across the country.  For more information about these workshops or to purchase John Miller's books, QBQ! and Flipping the Switch Visit our website at: http://www.personalaccountabilityatwork.com
