A Newsletter From The Rainmaker Group
 July 23rd, 2008

Hello!

We've got a great newsletter for you this week to help you Maximize Possibility in your organization!

Our lead article takes a look at recent benefit cuts announced by major online players Google and Facebook and how slashing these "killer benefits" can effect employee morale and the bottom line.

Our second article takes a look at an interesting report on employee coaching trends recently released by the American Management Association (AMA).

We've also got a QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote from John Miller addressing a question heard all too often: "Why do we have to go through all this change?", as well as a great article by Patrick Lencioni about the five temptations leaders and CEOs face every day.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - Why Do We Have to Go Through All This Change?
Are "Killer Benefits" Poised to Kill Employee Morale and/or Your Bottom Line?
Google is renowned for the "killer benefits" and work perks it offers its employees.  The daycare services that Google offers are second to none and among the most coveted benefits that it offers.

However, with stock prices down 25% from their highs, the $37,000 per child subsidy Google provides isn't sitting so well with investors, prompting a 75% increase in employee paid day care premiums.

Not surprisingly, this isn't going over well with Google parents.

Google employees aren't alone in their experiences.  Employees of Internet darling Facebook recently received notice that a $600 monthly housing subsidy provided by their employer would soon be discontinued.  As you can imagine, this didn't go over well with Facebook employees either.

With this in mind, a serious question begs to be asked:

AMA Releases Interesting Statistics on the use of Employee Coaching
The July 2008 issue of Talent Management Magazine reports some interesting statistics released by the American Management Association (AMA) about the use of coaching activities as a talent development tool.

The AMA survey of over 1000 businesses worldwide reports that employee and executive coaching aimed at improving performance and individual productivity is on the rise.

60% of North American companies report regular coaching of high potential employees, while 42% report a regular use of executive coaching.

That in and of itself is not so much of a surprise given the increased focus on developing talent.  However, there were some "juicier" stats to be found in the report.

Featured Guru - Patrick Lencioni
Marshall GoldsmithPatrick Lencioni is the author of six best selling business books including one of our favorites, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.

Lencioni is a natural story teller, has an uncanny ability to break complex problems into discrete, less threatening parts, and writes in a style that is concise and easy to read.

In his career Lencioni has consulted with some of the largest and most storied companies in America and draws from his experiences with these organizations to help managers and leaders in organizations of all sizes achieve greater productivity and effectiveness.

In this week's Featured Guru piece we'd like to feature an article by Lencioni titled The Simple Difficulty of Being a CEO that summarizes the five common temptations leaders frequently face.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - "Why Do We Have To Go Through All This Change?"
John Miller
The world we live in is constantly changing.

Just as we can count on the leaves changing color every fall, we can count on near constant change in our business environment.

New technology, new operating procedures, new facilities, new competitive threats, and new products and services are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the change we face almost everyday in business.

With change comes the inevitable question: "Why do we have to go through all of this change?" or even worse the seven deadly words: "We've never done it that way before!"

How we deal with change is a matter of personal accountability.  Do we make comments like those above or do we practice personal accountability and ask better questions such as "What can I do to adapt to the changing world around me?"

The choice is up to you...

Creating a culture of Personal Accountability should be a top priority for all organizations.  Team members who think and practice Personal Accountability can bring about incredible changes for an organization.  The blame game disappears, morale increases, and customer experiences are enhanced all thanks to the power of Personal Accountability.
