| Hello
Friend!
All of us here at The Rainmaker Group hope you and yours had a safe and enjoyable St. Patrick's Day and are excited for the coming of Spring which officially begins tomorrow!
We've got a great newsletter for you this week. Our lead article addresses the issue of Baby Boomer retirement and organizational knowledge loss. While we are all well aware of the large number of vacancies the Boomers are going to create as they retire in the coming years, we often forget about another important issue: the loss of organizational knowledge and expertise.
This looming phenomena has been dubbed by many as the "Baby Boomer Brain Drain" and we offer some suggestions for preventing all this knowledge and expertise from escaping your organization with retirement.
Our second article addresses the importance of setting and communicating performance expectations to new employees and how this impacts their performance and success on the job. The connection between the two might surprise you...
Power quote:
"You pile up enough tomorrows and you'll be left with nothing but a bunch of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering. "

| Plugging the Baby Boomer "Brain Drain" |
We are all aware of the wave of Baby Boomers expected to retire in the coming years and the number of vacancies that their departure from the workforce promises to leave.
One thing many of us are less cognizant about is the massive loss of organizational knowledge and expertise that can occur as these individuals retire.
While you won't find a line item on the balance sheet labeled Organizational Knowledge and Expertise, the value of this knowledge and expertise is undeniable and it would be a shame to allow it to go to waste as these seasoned workers retire.

Setting Performance Expectations - What is Your Organization's Pygmalion Effect? |
It may surprise you, but an employee's performance may have as much to do with the expectations you set of them as it does with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they bring to the job.
If you have a background in education, you have likely heard of the Pygmalion Effect - also known as the Rosenthal Effect or the Teacher Expectancy Effect. The Pygmalion effect essentially asserts that individuals perform up to the level that they are expected to perform. The more you expect an employee to perform at a high level, the more likely they are to do so.

| Featured Guru - Stephen Covey |
Stephen Covey is a real heavy hitter in the management "guru" world. In 1996 he was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 25 most influential Americans.
In his writings Covey covers a wide range of important management issues including communication, leadership, development, personal effectiveness, and quality management.
In this week's Featured Guru column we'd like to feature an article by Covey on the issue of total quality management. While some may argue that TQM was just another management fad of the 1990s we feel that its underlining principles haven't changed and are still beneficial to business leaders today.
In his article A Total Approach to Total Quality Covey examines Solectron - a Malcolm Baldridge Award winning organization - and the steps it took to holistically improve quality in its organization.
It takes more than just a Six Sigma certification to win the Malcolm Baldridge Award and every executive can learn something from Covey's examination of Solectron's approach to total quality.
