Drops of Rain

A Newsletter From The Rainmaker Group
 May 7th, 2008
Hello Jake!

We've got a great newsletter for you this week!

Our lead article poses a provocative question: Are your top performers really top performers?  The answer might not be as clear cut as you would think...

Our second article is in response to a question we hear fairly often: "What exactly is a Rainmaker?"  To answer this question we offer a definition of what it means to be a Rainmaker.

We've also got a QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote from John Miller on the ever popular topic of communication, as well as a great article by Seth Godin on how to give effective feedback as part of our Featured Guru series.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - Why Don't They Communicate Better?
Are Your Top Performers Really Top Performers?
Are Your Top Performers Really Top Performers?
If I were to ask you if the top performers for a given position in your organization were really the top performers in that position you would probably think I was crazy.

"Of course they are," you might blurt out, "Look at their numbers!"

OK, I admit it...  that was a question with a pretty obvious answer.

The real question that needs to be addressed is are your top performers producing at 100% of what the job is capable of producing?

When I ask this question the responses I receive are a lot less certain and sound something like this: "Well... yeah... I think so...hmmm..."

What it Takes to be a Rainmaker
A Rainmaker
With the name of my company being The Rainmaker Group, I am often asked, "What is a Rainmaker?"

When most people hear the word "Rainmaker" they typically think of a high-powered executive, salesperson, or lawyer with a knack for landing big clients and bringing in large streams of revenue for their organization.

While these individuals certainly fit the bill under the "traditional" definition of a Rainmaker, I have spent a considerable amount of time thinking about what it takes to be a Rainmaker and have concluded that anyone can be a Rainmaker within their organization - regardless of position or title.

In my line work I have come across Rainmakers of all shapes and sizes and have found that they all possess a similar set of traits and characteristics.

Featured Guru - Seth Godin
