| Coaching Malpractice is Rampant! |
At The Rainmaker Group, we get the privilege of serving as a coach to individuals, managers, and executives who are passionate about what they do and dedicated to being the best they can possibly be.
One thing that we see far too often that is truly frightening is what we like to refer to as "coaching malpractice." What we mean by coaching malpractice is "professional" coaching services that are destined for failure because they fail to gain an adequate understanding of what the true performance needs are for the individual being coached.
The key to an effective coaching relationship that provides tangible and lasting results is an objective understanding of the coaching needs of the individual. Many coaches rely on the individual being coached to understand and articulate his or her coaching needs. This can be a dangerous practice as self diagnosis is risky business at best.
There is a better way to approach coaching and it involves the use of psychometric profiling instruments that give an objective and un-biased assessment of an individual's strengths and weaknesses which can be effectively leveraged throughout the coaching process.

Five Sources of Interpersonal Conflict in the Workplace - Part 1 of 5 |
Chris Young - Founder, The Rainmaker Group
Today I'm excited to start the first of a five part series on a very important issue in many if not all workplaces today: interpersonal conflict.
The team members within an organization are what makes providing a product or service possible. When the relationships between team members are tense, strained, or downright hostile it can interfere with the daily operations of the organization and business can suffer as can the customer's experience with the organization.
The first part of this series on interpersonal conflict focuses on our behaviors. Our behavior is incredibly predictable and greatly influences our communication with others. Simply put, some behavioral styles are more likely to clash with one another than others are.
Does this mean that individuals with different behavioral styles should be kept on separate floors of your office building? Actually no...quite the contrary.
A balanced blend of behavioral styles greatly benefits an organization by incorporating differing perspectives and outlooks on various problems and opportunities the organization is likely to encounter.
The key to reducing unproductive employee conflict is to gain an understanding of how one's behavioral style influences one's communication and by learning behavioral signs that can be detected allowing one to "flex" his or her communication with a colleague to facilitate more productive communication and reduce conflict.
Be sure to check back with us in two weeks for the next installment of this series!

| Featured Guru - Seth Godin |
If you've ever read our Maximizing Possibility Blog you have probably gathered that us here at The Rainmaker Group are huge fans of Seth Godin. Quite simply...he rocks!
Seth Godin is in a class of his own when it comes to the field of marketing. When it comes to understanding what the customer wants and needs, Seth Godin gets it BIG TIME.
Godin also served as a columnist for Fast Company Magazine and also as Vice President of Permission Marketing for Yahoo! after selling Yahoo! one of the first online marketing companies, Yoyodyne, which he founded. Godin also found the time to start the popular website Squidoo.com in 2005 where "Everybody is an Expert in Something!"
Seth Godin truly is a revolutionary when it comes to marketing and the business world and there is much that we can all learn from Seth regardless of what our position in our organization is.
In this week's featured guru section we'd like to feature an article that Godin wrote during his time with Fast Company Magazine. In this article he argues that ideas are the true driver of business and the economy. He explains that during our country's first century the economy was all about building the largest and most productive farms, the second hundred years were dominated by the quest to achieve the most efficient factories possible, however the next one hundred years Godin argues are all about ideas.
As Godin goes on to explain in his articles (there are two on this topic), ideas are guiding our economy and making people and organizations rich. Without great ideas an organization simply cannot survive doing things the way they have always have been done.
For an idea to be profitable Godin argues, it must have the ability to "go viral" and spread quickly from person to person. Godin describes this as an "ideavirus" and offers some great tips for spreading your great ideas fast and reaping the rewards of doing so.
Godin also has made his book "Unleashing the Ideavirus" available free for download online as an e-book. Talk about practicing what you preach! Download it here. |
