Drops of Rain

A Newsletter From The Rainmaker Group
November 19th, 2007

Hello Friend!

We've got a great newsletter for you this week!  Our lead article is on a topic that far too many organizations neglect - succession planning.  The consequences of not having a succession plan in place for key positions are serious and can leave your organization without the proper talent it needs in these key positions. We'll discuss a method to identify the future talent in your organization and share an experience we recently had with one of our clients.

This week we've also got part two of our five part series on interpersonal conflict.  This week's topic: job-me conflict.

As usual we've got a great QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote by John Miller as well as a great article by this week's Featured Guru Tim Sanders.

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a few short days away!
We'd like to wish everyone the very best that Thanksgiving has to offer, and hope that you all have a safe and relaxing holiday.

Best wishes,
Your partners at The Rainmaker Group

Succession Planning - Diamonds in the "Rough"
Succession planning is critical to the longevity and success of any organization.  Without an established succession plan in place, your organization may be left scrambling to find the talent it needs in the event that key members in your organization retire, become ill, or move on to new opportunities.

For many organizations the problem with succession planning is knowing which team members to groom for future leadership positions and which team members provide the most value to the organization in their current roles.

A perfect example of this situation is succession planning for a sales manager position.  One's natural inclination is to immediately look at the top salespeople as obvious choices for a sales manager position.  However are your top salespeople really the best choice for a sales manager position?

The key to succession planning is knowing who has the skills necessary to succeed at the next level and who is best fit where they currently are.  Being a successful sales manager and being a successful salesperson require different skill sets.  Some of the skills required for these two positions overlap, while many do not.

This past week we had an experience with a client that illustrates the importance of succession planning and the talent that might be right under your nose.

Five Sources of Interpersonal Conflict in the Workplace - Part 2 of 5

Part two of our interpersonal conflict series is on a topic that many managers and team members fail to recognize as a cause of conflict: job-me conflict.

Job-me conflict is conflict that arises from the frustration an individual feels when he or she is in a position that they simply are not a good fit for.  Eventually this inner frustration caused by the the poor job fit will "boil over" in the form of conflict with other team members and managers.

I'll go out on a limb and say that all of us have probably worked with somebody who hated their job.  How did this effect you and those around you?

Chances are that you cringed when you were assigned to a project with this individual and that unproductive conflict within your team was likely caused by this team member.

While you probably blamed the conflict on this person being unpleasant or hostile by nature, the real cause of this problem was likely a job-me conflict being lived out by this individual every day.

Be sure to check back with us in two weeks for the next installment of this series!
