Drops of Rain

A Newsletter From The Rainmaker Group
 October 21st, 2008

Hello!

We've got a great newsletter for you this week to help Maximize Possibility in your organization!

The news headlines have been ripe with depressing headlines and stories about the current financial crisis and an impending economic slowdown.  Instead of dwelling on the negatives, we'll take a look at how you can use the economic downturn to recruit and retain the best employees.

In our second article, we'd like to examine two particularly devastating employee morale killers - employee favoritism and nepotism - and how they wreak havoc on your organization's culture.  We'll also provide five tips for reducing the potential that favoritism and nepotism become a part of your organization's culture.

We've also got a QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote by John Miller on one of our favorite topics - culture - and how Personal Accountability and the QBQ! can help to transform and improve your organization's culture.

In our Featured Guru section this week we'd like to feature a great article by the well respected business coach and psychologist Dr. Mark Goulston on the topic of leadership under pressure.

11 Ways You Can Use the Economic Downturn to Recruit, Hire, and Retain the Best Employees
If you've turned on your TV, listened to the radio, or opened a newspaper lately you are more than aware of the troubles our economy is facing.

While the headlines coming from the media can be discouraging and downright scary, it is important to know that there are always strategic opportunities to improve your business regardless of the current economic climate.

One of the biggest opportunities in any down economy is the flood of talent that hits the labor market as a result of corporate layoffs and reductions in force (RIFs).  Many companies lay off workers indiscriminately in an effort to reduce costs and in doing so give you an excellent opportunity to recruit, hire, and retain their best workers.

Employee Favoritism and Nepotism - Employee Morale Killers
Ensuring a high level of employee morale is a critical part of any organization's employee retention strategy.  It is common sense really...

What I have a hard time understanding is why, when most managers understand the link between team morale and employee turnover, so many engage in or permit activities that seriously damage morale.

Two particularly devastating activities that I see far too often are employee favoritism and nepotism in the workplace.  These activities are especially damaging to morale as those who are not the benefactors of preferential treatment quickly realize what is happening and feel helpless to succeed and advance their careers.  This leads to a lack of engagement in their job and in many cases employment with another organization.

To help you avoid the perils of employee favoritism and nepotism we'd like to provide you with 8 forms of favoritism we have found in working with numerous clients and five ways you can keep favoritism and nepotism from destroying morale in your organization.

QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote - Creating a QBQ! Culture of Personal Accountability
John Miller
This week's QBQ! Personal Accountability QuickNote from QBQ! author John Miller is on one of his favorite topics - Culture.

In this week's article John discusses how asking better questions of oneself and practicing personal accountability will bring about changes in an organization's culture as any culture is ultimately decided by its people.

Remember... all organizations, even the great ones, have room for improvement when it comes to creating a culture of personal accountability!
Creating a culture of Personal Accountability should be a top priority for all organizations.  Team members who think and practice Personal Accountability can bring about incredible changes for an organization.  The blame game disappears, morale increases, and customer experiences are enhanced all thanks to the power of Personal Accountability.
